Chapter 14
Chapter 14
Sparks Across the Continent
The sun rose over Lagos, painting the skyline gold. From his rooftop perch, Adams—The Blink—watched as the city stirred back to life. Vendors reopened stalls, children chased each other through the streets, and the waves lapped the shore as if nothing had happened.
But Adams knew better.
Time had almost shattered. Reality had bent. And somewhere beyond Lagos, the energy of the Rift pulsed faintly, a reminder that his fight was far from over.
A DISTANT CALL
Adams returned to Nima, to Dr. Bannerman’s workshop. The retired scientist had been monitoring the Rift’s residual energy, her screens filled with strange kinetic patterns he couldn’t fully understand.
“Adams,” she said, eyes wide, “the Rift pulse is spreading. Not just in Lagos, but across the continent.”
Adams frowned. “What does that mean?”
“It means you are not alone,” Dr. Bannerman replied. “There are others… chosen by the Nzuri, just like you. Their power is different, but the Rift seems to be awakening them.”
Adams’s pulse quickened. “Others? Like… heroes?”
“Maybe,” Dr. Bannerman said cautiously. “Or threats. We don’t know. But they’re moving fast… literally.”
A holographic map lit up, showing faint energy streaks in cities across Africa: Abuja, Nairobi, Dakar, Johannesburg, Cairo. Each streak pulsed like a heartbeat, moving too fast for the naked eye.
Adams exhaled slowly. “So… I have a team… or I’m about to fight a continent of speedsters?”
Dr. Bannerman’s lips curved into a thin smile. “Maybe both. That is why we need to train harder. And faster.”
MEETING THE SPEEDSTERS
Adams left Nima the next night, racing across highways and deserts, rivers and savannas. Wherever the Rift’s pulse touched, he followed.
In Abuja, he met Chioma, a young woman whose speed allowed her to manipulate light, leaving streaks of brilliance in the air. In Nairobi, Baraka, a man who could bend air around him to create temporary tornadoes. In Dakar, Aissatou, a girl who moved so fast she could phase through walls.
Each of them had been touched by Nzuri energy in different ways. Each had been waiting, unsure how to use their gifts.
Adams introduced himself as The Blink.
“We can’t let the Rift control us,” he said. “We need to work together—train, master our abilities, and prepare for what’s coming.”
Some were skeptical. Some were afraid. But when the Rift pulsed again, violently, nearly freezing a city block in Nairobi, all doubts vanished.
Adams and the new speedsters moved as one, restoring the flow of time and saving civilians. Their coordination was clumsy at first, but with every run, every blink, every narrowly avoided catastrophe, they grew stronger.
A CONTINENTAL NETWORK
By the end of that year, Blink had forged a network of heroes, each with unique abilities:
- Chioma, master of light manipulation.
- Baraka, wind and air control.
- Aissatou, intangibility and phasing.
- Adams, pure kinetic speed and time weaving.
Together, they formed the Rift Guardians, a team dedicated to protecting Africa—and eventually the world—from temporal threats.
Adams looked at the glowing horizon of the Sahara from the roof of a tall tower in Marrakech. The desert wind whipped at his jacket.
“We’re ready,” he whispered. “But how do we stop someone like Obrenu… or Kifo… if they come back?”
Chioma stepped beside him. “We adapt. We run faster than before. And we don’t run alone.”
Adams smiled, feeling the weight of the responsibility, but also the strength of their unity.
For the first time, he realized: speed wasn’t just about running. It was about connection, timing, and trust.
And somewhere deep in the Rift, the energy pulsed, aware that the Blink and the Rift Guardians were coming for it.
