Chapter 13
Race Against Time
The Lagos skyline was alive with electric tension. The Rift pulsed like a wounded star, casting golden and black light across the city. Buildings shimmered as if they were painted in liquid time, and every shadow flickered with possibilities that hadn’t yet happened.
Adams—The Blink—stood on the rooftop of the National Theatre, chest heaving, lightning dancing across his arms. Beside him, his future self nodded.
“This is it,” Future Blink said. “Obrenu and Kifo are working together now. If they fully harness the Rift, Lagos… no, the world… will be trapped in frozen time. Only speed, precision, and intention will save it.”
Adams’s fists clenched. He could feel the city beneath him, unaware of the chaos about to unfold.
“I won’t let that happen,” he said.
THE ENEMY APPEARS
From the Rift, two figures emerged:
Obrenu, cloaked in dark kinetic energy, eyes glowing red, the air around him vibrating with raw, destructive speed.
Kifo, the master of temporal manipulation, swirling in golden-black energy, radiating a distortion that made the city appear to bend unnaturally.
They moved in perfect synchrony, a deadly duo reshaping time and space with each step.
Obrenu’s voice rang out, deep and metallic:
“So, the little speedster thinks he can challenge us.”
Kifo’s voice followed, calm yet terrifying:
“He will learn… that speed alone cannot defeat inevitability.”
Adams swallowed hard. His future self stepped forward.
“Remember, Adams. You cannot rely on reflexes alone. You must anticipate, weave, sync. Every movement matters.”
Adams nodded, eyes fixed on the approaching threat.
THE BLINK STRIKES
Adams surged forward, a streak of blue lightning arcing across the sky. The air exploded with sound as his speed tore through streets, alleyways, and rooftops.
Obrenu fired a pulse of black energy—Adams dodged, leaving a blur in his wake. Kifo twisted reality, causing buildings to bend unnaturally, trying to trap him.
Adams’s future self appeared beside him. Together, they moved in perfect tandem, splitting their attention across multiple paths in time, striking and dodging simultaneously.
Obrenu and Kifo’s attacks grew faster, more chaotic. But Blink was learning. Every pulse, every crackle of energy, became a rhythm he could read. Every second held multiple choices.
Not just speed… intention.
Adams flickered between Obrenu and Kifo, tapping each at the exact moment, redirecting their energy blasts harmlessly into the Rift itself. Sparks of black and gold collided, surging across the city like miniature lightning storms.
THE FINAL MOMENT
The Rift began to destabilize. Golden-black lightning threatened to engulf all of Lagos.
Adams stopped. He didn’t move. He focused. He felt the heartbeat of the city.
Every person. Every life. Every moment counts.
He ran—no, he blipped—not just through space, but through time. Every step, every blink was calculated, precise, intentional. He struck Obrenu and Kifo simultaneously, redirecting their combined energy into the Rift, stabilizing it.
A massive shockwave of light exploded outward. The air vibrated. Buildings trembled. And then… silence.
AFTERMATH
Adams collapsed on the rooftop, sweat dripping, chest heaving. The Rift shimmered faintly, now sealed but alive, a reminder of the danger that lingered.
His future self placed a hand on his shoulder.
“You did it. You saved Lagos… this time.”
Adams smiled weakly. “But it won’t be over forever, will it?”
“No,” Future Blink said. “The Rift, Obrenu, Kifo… still, they are only the beginning. But you are ready. You are no longer just fast. You are The Blink.”
As dawn broke over Lagos, golden light spilling across the city, Adams looked down at the streets. Life continued, unaware of the disaster that had almost frozen every heartbeat.
For the first time, he allowed himself to feel it: hope.
For the time being, the city had a guardian.
And he would run faster than time itself to protect it.
