Off to Another Land

“Doc. I rushed here as soon as I heard you on the device.

What are we looking at?”

Adams asked as soon as he bolted through the door, at a speed that sent every loose document flying.

“Adams Ibrahim, I thought we decided that you were not going to continue speeding through the door anymore?”  Doc. remarked, standing in akimbo.

“Sorry, Mom”, was the reply from Adams with a hint of sarcasm.

Doc. continued:

“My radar systems have been beeping since morning. Something is up.

Remember the 5 catastrophes the old man spoke about? I think the first wave is very close.

Today, we test your new abilities in the Green Room. This simulation is different from the ones you’ve seen in those sci-fi movies you rave about all day.

This can become very real.

I’m going to push your abilities to the edge. Just promise me one thing- Don’t push yourself any further than is necessary, or I’ll shut you down myself.

A RECAP OF BATTLE PLANS

Doc.: What is the first rule for survival in the Green Room?

Adams: Meditation. Slowing down my vitals to increase the speed in my body.

Doc.: Right. Always remember that. No matter how strong your opponent is, calm is the sure way to hold your ground.

Second rule?

Adams: Don’t forget the first one.

Doc.: That’s my boy.

“Your vitals are a lot more stable now. With sustained breathing exercises, you can become invincible. Sometimes, it’s the small things that matter.

Remember your combos, memorize your numbers, and study the notes that I gave you after every training session.

THE SIGNAL:

The alarm sirens began to sound for a C-level alert for shifting in the tectonic plates of the Earth’s crust, somewhere in Africa. Any normal radar system would have shown it as a steady shimmer, but not the one that Doctor Bannerman had built.

All systems pointed to somewhere in Lagos.

Doctor Bannerman motioned to Adams.

“Come now! Quickly! We don’t have much to lose.

I can’t go with you for now, and you know why.

I have given you all that I have, preparing you for the unthinkable.

Right now, you are strong, and you have to become stronger.

There’s much to be discovered about this celestial power that you carry inside of you.

In Legos, you’ll be staying with a professor friend of mine. He’ll understand what you are.

He owns a rooftop lodging place. From up there you can properly survey the city.”

Adams interrupted.

“I need to see my family before Legos.”

Doc. reminded him of the sacrifices involved in being The Blink.

“No Adams, there’s no time. I’ll do that for you.

I can’t believe I’ll be saying this, but hurry up, boy. Godspeed.”
