Chapter 05
When the Sirens Arrived
The sirens came fast now—loud, layered, impossible to ignore.
Minutes later, blue lights painted the abandoned building as ambulances arrived. Paramedics wrapped blankets around the children, checking eyes, pulses, breathing. Kojo sat beside Obrimpong, silent now, his bravado gone.
“You came back for me,” Kojo said quietly.
Obrimpong nodded. “Anyone would have.”
Kojo shook his head. “No. Not like this.”
Detective Obodai Tetteh arrived just as the two captured kidnappers were being dragged out of the building, coughing and cursing, their masks torn away. He took in the scene—the frightened children, the chaos, the boy in the black jacket sitting far too calmly for his age.
“That one,” Obodai said to an officer. “Who is he?”
The officer shrugged. “That’s the strange part, sir.”
At the hospital, Obrimpong sat on a plastic chair, feet not quite touching the floor, a cup of water clutched in his hands. His mother stood in front of him, eyes red, voice trembling.
“Obrimpong Kesse,” she said, switching fully into her serious tone. “Do you know what you have done to me tonight?”
“I’m sorry, Ma,” he said softly.
She pulled him into a hug so tight it hurt. “Don’t ever do that again.”
He didn’t answer.
Across the room, Detective Tetteh watched, his mind racing.
The interview was brief, careful.
Obrimpong explained only what he had to—how he followed the phone, how he got inside, how he helped the others escape. He did not mention the voice mask. He did not mention the master’s words. Some things felt too big to say aloud.
“You’re telling me,” Detective Tetteh said slowly, “that you planned this alone?”
Obrimpong hesitated. Then nodded.
Tetteh leaned back, exhaling. “You know this case had no leads. None.”
Obrimpong stared at the floor.
“That training you have,” the detective continued. “Where did you learn it?”
“Martial arts,” Obrimpong replied. “From Master Crox.”
Tetteh’s eyes flickered.
By morning, the story was everywhere.
A child. Kidnappers. A rescue.
Reporters called it a miracle. The department called it a special case. No charges were filed. No explanations fully made sense.
Later that week, Obrimpong returned to the martial arts academy.
Master Crox studied him longer than usual.
“You crossed a line,” he said finally.
Obrimpong bowed his head. “Yes, Master.”
Crox placed a hand on his shoulder. “And you did not lose yourself.”
Kojo stepped into the hall behind him, nervous but determined.
“I want to learn,” Kojo said. “Like him.”
Master Crox looked from one boy to the other, then nodded. “Then training begins.”
Far away from cameras and questions, four figures stood in a circle, faces hidden, voices low.
“The boy acted alone,” one said.
“He showed restraint,” another replied.
“And courage,” a third added.
The fourth spoke last. “We have found the final one.”
In the shadows, Obrimpong Kesse had been chosen.
And the academy had awakened once more.
