Chapter 07
The Color of Night
Night in the Outerlands was not dark.
It was green.
Gas clouds thickened after sunset, glowing faintly as chemical residue reacted with falling temperatures. Fires burned brighter, casting warped shadows across rubble and twisted metal. Above it all, drones hovered like indifferent stars.
Nii Boye moved through the chaos as if the night belonged to him.
His lungs burned—raw from surrendering his mask—but his vision had never been clearer. The world peeled itself open. Every movement of the Agama, every twitch of a gecko scout, every ripple in the gas announced itself before it happened.
His eyes were no longer just seeing. They were remembering.
He ducked under a snapping jaw, leapt onto a rising shoulder, and drove his blades down in a cross that split glowing scale. Neon light burst outward, briefly overpowering the green haze.
Around him, the people fought—not with blades, but with survival. Fires were pushed forward to thin the gas. Metal traps collapsed under Nta scouts. Zola directed them like currents in a river, always moving, never still.
“They’re learning!” she shouted.
“So are we!” Nii Boye replied.
A sudden silence fell.
The Agama stopped attacking.
All of them. As if they had heard a sound not audible to humans. They turned their heads in unison—away from Nii Boye, away from the people—toward the mines.
Then the ground collapsed.
A shockwave rippled across the Outerlands as something massive forced its way upward, not bursting blindly, but rising with intention. The gas above the rupture thickened, spiraling like a storm.
Zola’s voice went tight. “That’s not Akokono.”
The earth opened wide.
What emerged was not a creature, but a structure of flesh and machine—segments of worm-like mass fused with ancient mining drills, neural cables glowing with toxic light. Antennae like antenna towers rose from its crown, pulsing rhythmically.
The Conductor. A vessel remotely controlled by an entity far away in a black crow gas mask. He controlled and spoke through it.
The voice hit them all at once, echoing through masks, cloth, bone.
THE VARIABLE ESCALATES.
People dropped to their knees, clutching their heads.
Nii Boye stood.
His neon pupils flared brighter than ever, cutting through the psychic pressure like blades through fog.
“You built this,” he said. “Out of war scraps and living things.”
WE PRESERVED ORDER.
“You preserved a city,” Nii Boye replied. “And poisoned everything else.”
The Conductor shifted, Agama and Nta freezing like statues around it.
SONGO IS THE CORE. YOU ARE EXCESS.
Nii Boye raised his swords, neon handles blazing against the green night.
“Then I’ll be your imbalance.”
He stepped forward alone.
Gas swirled. The Outerlands held its breath.
And for the first time since the world ended, the night chose a color brighter than poison. Neon.
