Chapter 03
The Shadow in the Web
The room felt suddenly smaller—thick with humidity, fear, and something darker threading through the air like smoke. Kojo’s breath came in sharp bursts, each one glowing faintly in the dim light. He had never felt more alive… or more trapped.
Obiri glided closer, his presence heavy and commanding, as if the shadows themselves obeyed him.
“You’re handling the mask impressively for a beginner,” Obiri said, circling slowly. “Most wearers lose their minds within minutes. Power bends them. Crushes them.”
Kojo’s hands trembled. “I—I don’t want power. I just want you to leave.”
Obiri chuckled softly, without humor.
“Power doesn’t care what you want.”
The Deity Whispers:
Inside Kojo’s mind, Ananse’s voice sharpened.
“Listen well, Kojo. This man is not like the others. His spirit is stained. He has touched forbidden things.”
What does that mean? Kojo thought desperately.
“It means he has danced with spirits even I avoid.”
Kojo’s throat tightened.
Obiri’s Secret:
Obiri stopped moving and looked directly up at Kojo, perched on the wall.
“Do you know what the mask really is, boy?”
Kojo swallowed. “A relic… a spirit vessel?”
“A test,” Obiri corrected. “Forged to reveal the truth of the wearer. But truth is not enough. Truth must be controlled.”
He reached under his shirt and pulled out a pendant—black stone carved into the shape of a spider clinging to a skull. It pulsed faintly with dark crimson light.
The sight made Kojo’s stomach twist.
Ananse hissed in his mind.
“The Shadow Pendant. Crafted from the bones of a corrupted priest. It lets its bearer see spiritual power… and steal it.”
Kojo’s heartbeat thundered.
Obiri held the pendant up.
“This is how I knew the mask had awakened again. And now that you’ve bonded with it, I can sense every pulse of its power through you.”
He smiled.
“And I intend to claim it.”
The First Clash:
Obiri signaled with two fingers.
A man burst through the doorway—bigger, faster, and angrier than the rest. Kojo barely reacted before the brute grabbed him from the wall and slammed him onto the floor.
Kojo gasped in pain.
The mask flared.
“Instinct, Kojo!” Ananse barked. “MOVE!”
Kojo rolled as the brute’s fist cratered the floor where his head had been. Dust exploded.
Kojo somersaulted backward, webbing the brute’s leg and flipping him upside down. The man crashed into a table, but instead of staying down, he ripped the webbing apart with raw strength.
“What!?” Kojo blurted. “That’s not supposed to happen!”
“He’s been enhanced,” Ananse growled. “Shadow blood. A mockery of divine power.”
The brute charged again.
Kojo panicked. He jumped—too high, too fast—crashing into the ceiling beam like a misfired rocket.
“Ow—!”
The brute laughed and reached up.
Kojo hung there awkwardly.
“Kick him, you fool!”
Kojo swung both legs, slamming them into the brute’s face. The man toppled backward, smashing into the wall with a heavy thud.
But another attacker lunged.
Then another.
Three men now.
Kojo’s heart raced.
“This is too much!”
“Then let me help,” Ananse crooned.
Before Kojo could object, the mask pulsed—and instinct surged like electricity through his limbs.
Kojo backflipped, twisted mid-air, and landed gracefully. He shot two web-lines, yanked a table into his attackers, then spun, binding another man in a glowing cocoon of spirit-web without even thinking.
His movements were… beautiful. Precise. Controlled.
Kojo stared at his own hands.
“How did I—?”
“My power, your body,” Ananse said. “A partnership, if you will.”
The Predator Watches:
As his men fell, Obiri watched silently, not in anger—but fascination.
When the last thug hit the ground, webbed to unconsciousness, Obiri clapped slowly.
“Remarkable. Your bond is stronger than I expected.”
Kojo’s breathing was ragged. “Stay back.”
Obiri tilted his head.
“You believe this mask makes you special. Chosen. But I have been preparing for it far longer than you’ve been alive.”
He raised the Shadow Pendant.
The air thickened. The spiritual web around Kojo trembled violently.
Ananse hissed.
“Kojo—MOVE!”
But Kojo felt pulled—like invisible hands were gripping the mask, tugging at his soul.
“What—what’s happening!?”
Obiri’s eyes glowed blood-red.
“I’m claiming what’s mine.”
The Mask Reacts:
Kojo stumbled backward, clutching his chest. His vision blurred. The walls seemed to melt. The web-lines binding the fallen men dissolved into smoke.
Ananse’s voice turned sharp and urgent.
“His pendant is draining me. He’s trying to force our bond apart. Fight him, Kojo!”
Kojo struggled.
“HOW!?”
“With your truth!”
A surge of light burst from the mask, throwing Obiri back a few steps.
But not nearly enough.
Obiri steadied himself, wiping a thin line of blood from his lip.
“Interesting,” he murmured. “You resist. That means your heart is… clean.”
He spit the last word like venom.
“Which only proves I’m more worthy than you.”
Kojo’s Desperation:
Kojo backed toward the window.
He had never fought before tonight. Never swung on webs. Never faced a man with dark magic dripping from his skin.
And yet… something inside him hardened.
No.
He wouldn’t let Obiri take this mask.
Wouldn’t let him desecrate what his grandmother died protecting.
Kojo squared his shoulders.
“You’re not worthy,” he said quietly. “Not of this power. Not of her legacy.”
Obiri’s expression darkened.
“You have no idea what legacy truly is.”
He snapped his fingers.
From outside, heavy footsteps pounded toward the house.
More men.
More enhanced shadows.
An entire squad.
Kojo’s eyes widened.
“There’s more of them!?”
Obiri smiled cruelly.
“Oh, Kojo. You’re only at the beginning of this web.”
Kojo shot a web-line through the window and propelled himself out into the night—just as a new wave of enhanced soldiers crashed through the door.
As Kojo soared into the darkness, heart thundering, Ananse whispered:
“Run for now, Kojo Tawia. But know this…
All threads lead back to their maker.
And Obiri Mensah is weaving a story far older—and far more dangerous—than you realize.”
Below him, Obiri stepped into the moonlit yard.
And smiled.
The hunt was far from over.
