Can Tanka Drive?

Can Tanka Drive tells the story of Kofi Tanka (Kofi T), a brilliant but restless freshman at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, who dreams of becoming a professional car racer in a country with no motorsport culture. He is the son of a late street-racing legend known as “The Ruthless Overtaker,” a pioneer of the N1 Street Races whose death forced Kofi to mature early. Now under the care of Uncle Tony, a barber who pushes him toward medicine, Kofi enrolls in a pre-med course despite his true love for engines, speed, and music.

On campus, surrounded by wealthy students and exotic cars, Kofi joins the Racing Club and falls for a car-loving second-year student. But his passion for speed leads to a disastrous illegal race, costing him his scholarship and triggering a spiral of academic decline, broken relationships, and financial struggle. As he works menial jobs to survive, Kofi faces campus gangs, drugs, get-rich-quick schemes, and the heavy consequences of love and peer pressure.

By the end of his first year, Kofi is no longer carefree but hardened and self-aware, driven by responsibility to his younger sibling and the shadow of his father’s legacy. The story explores speed and its consequences, love and distraction, and the fight to chase an impossible dream—asking whether Kofi can truly control his life, or if speed will always outrun him.
