Chapter 08
Chapter 08
First Real Date
The restaurant was quiet for once.
Late afternoon, between rushes. Plastic chairs stacked. The smell of fried oil hanging stubbornly in the air. Kofi wiped down a table, shoulders aching, mind elsewhere, when the bell above the door rang.
He looked up.
Anita stood there.
Not dressed for campus. Not dressed to impress. Just simple. Intentional.
For a moment, Kofi thought exhaustion was playing tricks on him.
“Hi,” she said.
He froze. “Anita… what are you doing here?”
She glanced around the small place—the worn counter, the tired staff, the heat. “Looking for you.”
Something in his chest tightened.
Kofi switched roles without thinking.
He pulled out a chair for her. Cleaned the table again, even though it was already spotless. He brought her water first—cold, sweating against the glass—then carefully took her order like it mattered more than any exam.
The other workers watched quietly.
When the food came, Kofi made sure it was right. No shortcuts. No rush.
Anita noticed.
“You don’t act like this at school,” she said softly.
“I don’t get the chance,” he replied.
They ate slowly. Talked gently. Not about racing. Not about school. About small things. Music. Memories. Silence.
For the first time in weeks, Kofi felt human again.
When his shift ended, he removed his apron and hesitated.
“I know a place,” he said. “Not fancy. But better than this.”
She smiled. “Lead the way.”
They walked through the evening streets, Accra glowing and chaotic around them. Kofi bought waakye from a roadside vendor—extra shito, just how she liked it. They sat on a low wall, sharing food, laughing quietly.
He took a breath.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “For shutting you out. For making everything heavy.”
Anita looked at him for a long moment. “I don’t need perfection, Kofi. I just need honesty.”
“I’m scared,” he admitted. “Scared of failing. Of becoming nothing.”
She reached for his hand. “You’re becoming something. That’s what scares you.”
They sat there until the city softened into night.
It wasn’t loud.
It wasn’t flashy.
But it was their first real date.
And for once, speed wasn’t the answer.
