Chapter 05
Chapter 05
The First Challenge
The argument started the way most dangerous things did—casually.
It was a humid evening, the kind that clung to skin and shortened tempers. Kofi leaned against a concrete barrier near the engineering block, talking quietly with Anita and two guys from the Cars and Racing Club. They were discussing engine mods, debating superchargers versus turbos, when laughter cut through the conversation.
Slow. Deliberate.
Kofi didn’t need to turn around to know who it was.
The prince.
He stood with his usual crew—designer clothes, expensive sneakers, keys dangling like trophies. One of his friends mimicked Kofi’s earlier explanation from the night of the race, exaggerating it for laughs.
“Listen to him,” the guy said. “Professor Engine.”
The prince smirked. “You talk too much for someone who hasn’t driven anything serious.”
Anita stiffened. “That’s unnecessary.”
The prince ignored her. His eyes stayed on Kofi. “All theory, no seat time. You people read specs online and think you’re racers.”
Kofi felt the familiar heat rise in his chest.
“I never said I was a racer,” he replied calmly. “I said I know cars.”
“That’s the problem,” another guy cut in. “Too known. Always correcting people.”
The word stung.
Too known.
The prince stepped closer. “If you’re that confident, prove it. Talking is cheap.”
Silence spread around them. Phones appeared. People sensed blood.
Kofi hesitated.
Every lesson Uncle Tony ever taught him screamed walk away. Every memory of his father whispered don’t back down.
“Prove it how?” Kofi asked.
The prince smiled.
“Driver’s seat,” he said. “Tonight.”
Anita grabbed Kofi’s arm. “Don’t.”
The prince laughed. “See? Even your girl knows.”
Kofi gently pulled his arm free.
“I didn’t come here to fight,” he said. “But don’t mistake calm for fear.”
The crowd murmured.
“Good,” the prince replied. “Engineering road. One run. No excuses.”
Kofi’s heart pounded—not from fear, but from clarity.
This wasn’t about pride.
It was about identity.
He looked at Anita. She searched his face, torn between worry and belief.
“You don’t have to do this,” she said softly.
“I know,” Kofi replied. “But I need to.”
As engines began to wake and headlights flickered on, Kofi realized something frightening and exhilarating at the same time:
This was his first real challenge.
And once you answered a challenge like this, there was no going back.
