Chapter 12
Chapter 12
Heart Of The Game
The pressure of the National University Qualifiers was building like a storm.
But before the games began, something else was happening—
something slow, subtle, and powerful.
Something between Kobby and Ama.
WHEN FRIENDSHIP SHIFTS
It started with small things.
A longer hug.
An inside joke that made them laugh so hard their stomachs hurt.
The way Ama always saved him a seat during lectures,
claiming it was “strategic positioning”
when it was clearly something more.
One evening, after a long practice,
Ama found Kobby sitting alone on the bleachers, his head bowed.
“You’re thinking again,” she said gently, sitting beside him.
Kobby sighed. “Just… pressures.”
Ama nudged him.
“You’re doing great. I mean—look how far you’ve come.”
Kobby smiled weakly.
He wanted to believe her.
But the weight of expectations—
from the team, from the scouts, from himself—
was crushing him.
Ama placed her hand over his.
Warm. Steady. Sure.
“I’m here. Anytime you need me.”
He didn’t pull away.
That was the moment their friendship shifted—
softly, quietly—
into something deeper.
AMA’S SECRET DREAM
Ama wasn’t just supporting Kobby for fun.
She had dreams of her own.
Late at night, while Kobby slept in his room exhausted after training,
Ama stayed awake at her desk, completing assignments,
watching online lectures, taking notes.
Sports physiotherapy.
Athlete recovery science.
Muscular rehabilitation.
She wasn’t just doing it to pass.
She was preparing—
to become a national team physiotherapist someday.
Sometimes, while massaging Kobby’s injured calf after practice,
she’d whisper to herself:
“One day… this will be my real work.”
But Ama kept her dream hidden.
She didn’t want Kobby thinking she was using him
as a stepping stone.
She wanted him to believe that she stood with him because she cared.
Because she genuinely believed in him.
Because he mattered.
And he did.
More than she allowed herself to admit.
THE MOMENT EVERYTHING ALMOST SPILLED OUT
One Friday night after a brutal training session,
Ama and Kobby walked back to the hostel together.
The campus lights glowed softly,
and cool Harmattan wind brushed against their faces.
Kobby suddenly stopped walking.
“Ama… can I ask you something?”
“Yes?” she replied, tilting her head.
“Why do you believe in me so much?
Even from the start… when I wasn’t good at anything?”
Ama froze.
The question pierced her heart.
She took a step closer.
“Kobby… you weren’t bad. You were just unseen.
And I’ve never liked how people treat someone because of their size, or voice, or background.
But you? You’re different. You work hard.
And when you love something… you fight for it.”
Kobby’s eyes softened.
“No one ever said that to me.”
Ama’s chest tightened.
She wanted to hug him.
She wanted to say more.
She wanted to tell him that when she looked at him,
she didn’t see fat or slow or unfit—
she saw potential, purpose.
But Kobby was still fighting his self-esteem demons.
And Ama didn’t want to pressure him.
So she simply said,
“You matter, Kobby.
More than you know.”
For the first time,
Kobby believed her.
RANGER NOTICES
Ranger was many things—
competitive, disciplined, hot-headed—
but he wasn’t blind.
During training, he saw the way Ama watched Kobby.
Saw the way Kobby smiled when she walked into the gym.
Saw the subtle, unspoken language between them.
During a water break, Ranger pulled Kobby aside.
“Ei, big man. You and Ama… something dey go on?”
Kobby nearly choked on his drink.
“What? No! We’re just—friends.”
Ranger smirked.
“Friends that look at each other like movie soundtrack dey play?”
Kobby flushed red, waving him away.
“Focus on training, Ranger.”
Ranger shrugged.
“All I’m saying: don’t break her heart.
And don’t let your heart distract you from the qualifiers.”
“I won’t,” Kobby said quietly.
But he wasn’t sure which part he meant.
THE NIGHT BEFORE THE QUALIFIERS
Ama found Kobby alone again, sitting under the campus basketball hoop.
He looked tired—mentally more than physically.
“Tomorrow is big,” Ama said softly.
“Yeah,” Kobby replied. “I’m scared… of failing again.”
Ama knelt in front of him, placing both hands on his knees.
“Kobby, listen to me.”
He met her eyes.
Afraid.
Vulnerable.
“You are not that boy they used to laugh at.
You are not the jokes.
You are not the whispers.
You are not your body.
You are your heart.
And your heart is stronger than anyone I’ve ever known.”
Her voice cracked a little.
And Kobby felt something shift in his chest.
“Ama…” he whispered.
“Thank you.”
She stood, pulled him into a warm hug,
and held him longer than she intended.
“Win for yourself tomorrow.
Not for the crowd.”
Kobby nodded against her shoulder.
“I’ll try.”
“You won’t try,” she corrected, smiling.
“You will do.”
For the first time,
the fear inside him loosened.
THE FEELING THEY DON’T SAY OUT LOUD
As Ama walked away, Kobby watched her.
Really watched her.
Her confidence.
Her strength.
Her kindness.
Her fire.
He felt his chest tighten again—
not with fear this time,
but with something far more dangerous.
Something that could change everything.
Something he wasn’t ready for.
Ama, walking ahead, touched her chest lightly.
Her heart was racing too.
She didn’t know if it was fear…
or something else entirely.
Neither of them said it.
Not yet.
But the bond was there.
Growing.
Quiet.
Powerful.
And soon—
love might become the biggest challenge
Kobby would ever face.
