Chapter 10
Chapter 10
The Redemption Game
The storm that soaked Kobby that night became a metaphor—
the pressure, the doubt, the insults, the loneliness—
all washing away, leaving only steel behind.
The next morning, he returned to campus with a calm he hadn’t felt since making the team.
Not because the rumors had stopped—
they were worse than ever.
But because he finally understood:
Your truth doesn’t disappear just because people lie louder.
THE BIG GAME ANNOUNCEMENT
Coach Samori gathered the team after warm-up drills.
Their rivalry match with Accra Tech University—one of the strongest basketball teams in the region—was in three days.
This was the match that determined rankings for the national university qualifiers.
Winning it meant national scouts would attend future games.
“This match is everything,” Coach said. “And I’m starting Kobby at power forward.”
The gym fell silent.
A few players nodded.
A few groaned.
And one—Kobyson—rolled his eyes hard enough to make it obvious.
But the decision was final.
And risky.
Putting Kobby in the starting lineup meant Coach had complete faith in him despite the controversy.
Now he had to prove him right.
THE NIGHT BEFORE THE GAME
After practice, Kobby walked out of the gym to find a small crowd of students waiting.
Some held signs.
Some held phones.
Some had blank, unsure expressions.
A girl from class stepped forward.
“Kobby… is it true? The rumors?”
He looked her straight in the eyes.
“No. And tomorrow, you’ll see why.”
His voice was steady, firm.
No anger.
No fear.
Just truth.
Some students nodded.
Some remained doubtful.
But everyone backed away as he walked off—
not out of fear, but out of respect.
RANGER’S UNEXPECTED VISIT
Later that night, as Kobby sat on his bed reviewing plays, someone knocked.
He opened the door to find Ranger standing there—
hands in his pockets, jaw tight, eyes serious.
“Kobby… we need to talk.”
Kobby stepped aside, letting him in.
Ranger stayed standing, as if unsure of what he was doing.
“I heard the things people are saying,” Ranger began.
“And I saw what some boys on the team did.”
Kobby’s eyes narrowed. “You knew?”
Ranger nodded slowly.
“I confronted them. The picture is fake. They were jealous.
But listen… I’m sorry I didn’t step up sooner.”
Kobby blinked.
He never expected an apology—especially from Ranger.
Ranger continued:
“I don’t like how fast you’ve risen.
I won’t lie. It shook me.
But you earned your spot.
And tomorrow… we need you.”
Kobby nodded.
“We need each other.”
For the first time, they shook hands—
not as rivals,
not as competitors,
but as teammates.
GAME DAY — THE ARENA FILLS
The sports complex buzzed with energy.
Students poured in wearing face paint, jerseys, and bandanas in school colors.
Drums beat like thunder.
Vuvuzelas blared.
Chants filled the air.
But the loudest whispers still concerned one person:
“Do you think Kobby will choke?”
“Or will he be exposed today?”
“If he plays well, maybe the rumors are false.”
National sports journalists had even shown up, hoping to witness a scandal or a miracle.
Kobby entered the arena with headphones on.
But this time, he didn’t shrink from the noise.
He embraced it.
Because today wasn’t just a match.
It was a statement.
In the dressing room Coach rallied up the team and gave one of his usual inspirational speeches.
“Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear- a quote by the great Nelson Mandela. So boys, bring your courage onto the court and leave nothing behind.”
Arms together, they shouted on the count of three,
“WOLVES!”
and then proceeded to walk onto the court.
THE MATCH BEGINS
The referee blew the whistle.
Kobby and Accra Tech University’s tallest player jumped for the ball.
The ball rose—
time slowed—
and with perfect timing, Kobby soared higher and tipped it to Ranger.
The crowd erupted.
Accra Tech University came hard.
They were fast, coordinated, and aggressive.
But Kobby matched them.
He boxed out with strength.
He grabbed rebounds over taller players.
He set screens that shook defenders.
He passed with precision.
Every movement was clean.
Every decision sharp.
And when Kobby scored the team’s first basket—
a smooth turnaround jumper—
the crowd roared so loud the rafters shook.
“BIG BLACK BALLER!”
“BBB! BBB! BBB!”
The name once used to mock him
now shook the arena like a war chant.
THE MOMENT OF TRUTH
Third quarter.
Scores tied: 58–58.
The atmosphere electric.
Accra Tech switched strategy—they focused their defense on Kobby.
Three players boxed him in.
They shoved.
They pulled his jersey.
They whispered insults.
Trying to break him.
“Kwasia, big boy paa. Let’s see your ‘power’ now.”
“Chale, your big size be your only skill.”
“I hear you dey use enhancers. Without them, you be nothing.”
Kobby felt the old pain rise—
the old wounds of body-shaming,
the old insecurity,
the old fear.
Then he remembered training in the rain.
The Phantom’s words.
Ranger’s apology.
Coach’s trust.
He inhaled.
Exhaled.
And when he opened his eyes—
the court slowed.
The ball pulsed.
The power awakened.
Not wild.
Not overwhelming.
Controlled.
Focused.
Accra Tech ’s center shoved him—
but Kobby spun smoothly, cutting through the defense like a blade.
One player lunged—
Kobby euro-stepped around him.
Another jumped—
Kobby rose higher, stronger—
and slammed the ball into the hoop with a thunderous dunk that shook the entire court.
The crowd exploded.
People jumped.
People screamed.
The announcer lost his voice yelling:
“BIG! BLACK! BALLER!”
Even the national scouts stood up.
THE FINAL PLAY
Fourth quarter.
5 seconds left.
Scores tied: 74–74.
Coach called timeout.
“We’ll run Isolation 3. Kobby takes the final shot.”
Ranger slapped Kobby’s back.
“You got this.”
The whistle blew.
Ranger inbounded.
Ball to Kobby.
Five seconds.
Kobby dribbled—once, twice.
Four seconds.
Accra Tech’s best defender rushed him.
Three seconds.
Kobby hesitated—
stepped back—
created space.
Two seconds.
He rose.
Shot.
One second.
The arena held its breath.
The ball spun…
dropped…
and hit the net with a clean swish.
Buzzer beater.
Game over.
Victory.
The crowd erupted into chaos—
students flooded the court, lifting Kobby into the air, shouting his name.
“BBB! BBB! BBB!”
He had done more than win a game.
He had shut down lies.
He had silenced envy.
He had reclaimed his name.
And as he looked into the roaring crowd,
he felt it—
this was only the beginning.
The national team was no longer a dream.
It was a destination.
