Chapter 08
Shadows Of Envy
Success changes people.
But Kobby was learning that it also changes the people around you.
After the interview went viral, Kobby’s life shifted completely.
Strangers smiled at him in the dining hall.
Lecturers who never noticed him suddenly praised his “determination.”
The same boys who used to mock his weight now acted like longtime friends.
But support wasn’t the only thing rising around him.
Envy was growing too.
And like a weed, it crept silently in the dark.
THE WHISPERS
During training one afternoon, Kobby stepped out for water and overheard two teammates whispering.
“Bro, it doesn’t make sense. How did he jump from nothing to star player?”
“I hear he’s using something.”
“Something like what?”
“Steroids or some secret enhancers. You think this fat guy suddenly got skills from where?”
Kobby froze.
The words hit him harder than any insult he’d ever endured.
Not because they doubted him—
but because now they were trying to rewrite his hard work, his pain, his transformation.
He clenched his jaw and walked back into the gym, pretending he hadn’t heard.
But the seed had been planted.
Rumors began spreading.
Slowly at first…
then faster, like wildfire.
Kobby felt it in the glances thrown his way.
In the hushed conversations that stopped whenever he entered a room.
He tried to ignore it.
Focus.
Train.
Keep pushing.
But envy was a storm, and it was building.
RANGER’S STRUGGLE
Ranger, the team captain, was having a difficult time of his own.
He had always been the star—fast, talented, confident.
But ever since Kobby joined, he felt overshadowed.
During scrimmages, Kobby’s presence changed the whole dynamic.
Plays flowed better.
Defense tightened.
The team listened to Kobby’s suggestions more than his.
Even Coach began using Kobby as an example during drills.
“Move like Mensah!”
“Watch how Kobby cuts!”
“See the intensity he brings!”
Those words burned in Ranger’s chest.
He covered it with silence, but inside, jealousy brewed.
After practice one day, Ranger confronted Coach Samori.
“Coach… are you replacing me?”
Samori sighed. “Ranger, no one is replacing you. But competition is part of the game. Kobby pushes you to be better.”
Ranger looked away, hurt masked behind pride.
“Yes, Coach.”
But deep down, resentment simmered.
THE UNDERGROUND PLAN
Meanwhile, the whispers had reached the benchwarmers—players who rarely got game time.
Three of them gathered in a hostel room late one night.
“This guy is ruining everything,” one said.
“He’s taking all the attention,” another added.
“If he keeps this up, we’ll never get play time.”
A darker idea surfaced.
“What if… something exposes him?”
They didn’t plan anything violent.
No one wanted to harm him physically.
But they wanted him gone from the spotlight.
So they began plotting a subtle sabotage.
One that would question his integrity, his abilities, and his sudden rise.
And the first step…
was to make sure the whole school believed he was cheating.
THE FAKE EVIDENCE
Two days later, a blurry photo started circulating on campus WhatsApp pages.
Kobby in his hostel room—
except the image had been edited to show fake pill bottles and injections on his table.
The caption read:
“So this is how BBB got good overnight? Disgraceful.”
It spread fast.
Too fast.
By evening, the entire campus had seen it.
Some people defended him.
Many didn’t.
“Ahh I knew it!”
“So he’s on boosters!”
“No wonder he moves like that.”
“Fake talent.”
Kobby sat on his bed staring blankly at the screen.
His throat tightened.
His chest felt heavy.
He hadn’t felt this exposed since the first day he was rejected on the court.
But this was worse.
Because now…
he had something to lose.
THE PHANTOM’S WARNING
That night, Kobby dragged himself to the outdoor court.
He didn’t train.
He just sat on the bench, silent, crushed.
The Phantom appeared beside him as quietly as a shadow.
“You feel betrayed,” he said.
Kobby looked up, eyes burning.
“They’re lying about me. They want to destroy me.”
“And they will keep trying,” The Phantom replied calmly.
“Power attracts doubt.”
“Success attracts enemies.”
“Greatness attracts darkness.”
Kobby clenched his fists. “What do I do?”
“You rise.”
The Phantom placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Let them doubt. Let them lie. What matters is that you know the truth—and that you keep moving.”
Kobby exhaled shakily.
Something inside him reignited.
Not rage.
Not fear.
Determination.
He stood up, picked up his ball, and stepped onto the court.
The Phantom nodded.
“Good. Remember—
Legends are not built in comfort.
They are built in fire.”
And as Kobby began to train again, the power activated—
stronger, fiercer, more intense than ever before.
Because now, he wasn’t just playing to prove himself.
He was playing to reclaim his name.
