Chapter 03
General Kai’s Return
The explosion echoed down the mountain like thunder trapped inside stone. Birds scattered. Leaves shook loose and drifted to the forest floor. Accura and Adjoa sprinted through the ruins toward the source of the blast.
When they reached a cliff overlooking a valley, smoke was rising from the main road that cut through the mountains. A convoy of armored trucks burned in the distance.
Adjoa lifted her binoculars.
“Those are military transport vehicles,” she muttered. “Why attack them?”
Accura didn’t need binoculars—his visor zoomed in. He saw masked soldiers surrounding the wreckage, all wearing black armor marked with a yellow serpent emblem.
Kai’s men.
But that wasn’t the part that made his grip tighten.
A tall figure stepped out of one of the trucks—broad-shouldered, draped in a custom combat suit with reinforced plating and a long coat. He wore a face mask shaped like a serpent’s jaw, and two cybernetic gauntlets glowed with pulsing yellow circuitry.
General Kai.
Adjoa exhaled sharply. “I knew he was alive… but damn.”
Kai raised one gauntlet. A coil of electric-yellow energy crackled around it. With a swift gesture, he fired a blast that launched a burning vehicle off the road.
His voice boomed through the valley, amplified by speakers hidden in his mask.
“Search the wreckage! Find the device and the girl!”
Adjoa frowned. “What girl?”
Accura didn’t answer. His focus locked on Kai.
Even from this distance, he could feel something wrong—dark Auru, twisted and corrupted like rotting roots. It pulsed from Kai’s gauntlets.
Someone had given him access to Auru technology
—someone who should not exist.
Then Kai turned, as if sensing he was being watched.
For a moment, Accura and the General locked eyes across the valley.
The serpent mask tilted slightly.
Kai spoke, not to his men—but directly into the air, knowing Accura could hear him through the Auru currents:
“Come find me, little survivor.
Your temple’s ashes are hungry for company.”
Accura’s blades flared bright green.
Adjoa grabbed his arm. “Don’t go charging in! We need a plan.”
Accura took a silent breath. She was right. Kai wanted a public fight. A spectacle. The General always had a flair for theatrics—to terrify, to dominate, to send a message.
Another blast shook the valley.
Adjoa cursed under her breath. “Look—he’s heading toward the lower villages. If he hits a populated area—”
Accura stared after the convoy as it began moving down the road.
This wasn’t just an attack.
This was the beginning of something larger.
A test.
A warning.
A declaration.
Adjoa snapped her tablet open. “We need to intercept him before he reaches the villages. I can call in a drone team, maybe a roadblock—”
Accura stood still, thinking.
Kai’s words still echoed.
Find the device and the girl.
Accura picked up a stone and drew a quick symbol in the dirt—an Auru glyph. Adjoa watched it glow faintly with green light.
“What’s that?” she asked.
Accura drew two more symbols beside it.
She squinted. “Okay… what does that mean?”
He pointed at each one in turn, translating with simple gestures.
Girl.
Auru.
Danger.
Adjoa’s eyes widened. “Wait—you’re saying the girl Kai is searching for has Auru energy?”
Accura nodded once.
“Damn,” she whispered. “If he gets his hands on her…”
The two shared a look.
Then Accura stepped toward the cliff, took one breath—
—and vanished in a green streak, descending the mountain.
Adjoa groaned. “Seriously!? You ninja types never wait for backup!”
She grabbed her radio and ran.
