Chapter 02
Shadows of the Auru
The sun had not yet risen over the Akwapim mountains, but the sky was already glowing with hints of gold. Mist curled around the trees like ancient spirits waking from sleep. Deep within the forest, hidden behind the Asenema waterfalls and stone cliffs, stood the broken remains of the Auru Temple—Accura’s childhood home.
Today, it was a graveyard.
Accura knelt at the cracked stone altar, running his fingers across the faded symbols carved into the rock. The air smelled of moss and memories. A single green flame flickered in a rusted bronze bowl beside him—the only fire he would allow to burn in this sacred place.
He closed his eyes.
And let the past return.
Years Ago
A young boy—barefoot, skinny, determined—swung a wooden practice sword with both hands. His strikes were sloppy, wild, more enthusiasm than technique. Nearby, the old master watched with a patient smile.
“Again,” the master said.
The boy’s arms trembled. “Master Nuru… I’m tired.”
“A warrior is always tired,” Nuru replied. “It means you are growing.”
He guided the boy’s hands, correcting his form. “Focus. Breathe. The world is loud—but the Auru is quiet. Listen to the quiet.”
Young Accura closed his eyes.
And for the first time, he felt it—
a faint hum beneath his feet,
a glow in his chest,
a rhythm older than the mountains.
His first connection to Auru.
The memory faded.
Back in the present, Accura rose to his feet. He moved deeper into the ruins, stepping carefully over fallen beams and shattered stone. He stopped before a long scorch mark burned into the floor.
The mark created the shape of a serpent.
General Kai’s signature.
Accura clenched a fist. Even as a child, Kai had been a looming myth—leader of a secret paramilitary unit, rumored to have no soul. Years later, he returned with mercenaries and weapons no ordinary soldier should have possessed. His attack on the temple had been precise, brutal, merciless.
The Auru Order never stood a chance.
Accura was one of the few survivors—and the only one trained in the Twin Blade style.
A rustling sound snapped him back to the present.
Accura’s hands went to his hilts instantly.
A figure stepped into the light.
A woman—tall, athletic, dressed in tactical gear, with a short fade haircut and a confident stance. She held her hands up to show she wasn’t a threat.
“You don’t remember me, do you?” she said.
Accura didn’t move.
She stepped closer.
“Name’s Adjoa Kessie. Special investigator, Anti-Corruption Task Force. I’ve been following your… activities.”
Accura tilted his head slightly.
Adjoa smirked. “Relax. If I wanted to arrest you, I wouldn’t walk into a creepy forest ruin alone. I came because your little rescue last night stirred up a hornet’s nest.”
She tossed a folder onto a piece of broken stone.
Accura opened it.
Inside were surveillance photos of men in military gear unloading crates labeled in Russian. Another showed a map of the city with red circles drawn around the ports.
“Kai’s planning something big,” Adjoa said. “Explosives, weapons, bribes—the whole package. And now he knows you’re alive.”
Accura’s blades glowed faintly, reacting to his rising Auru.
“Look,” she continued, “I don’t care who you are or why you dress like a ghost ninja with glowing swords. But if Kai is really back… then Ghana’s in danger. I’m good at my job—but I can’t stop him alone.”
She extended her hand.
“Work with me.”
“We can be stronger together.”
Accura stared at her.
He’d walked alone for years. It was safer. Cleaner. He didn’t need partners. He didn’t want attachments.
But then that familiar phrase she used made him remember Master Nuru’s famous saying:
“Stronger Together.”
Accura sheathed his swords.
And offered his hand.
Adjoa shook it firmly.
“Good,” she said. “Because Kai’s already moving. And he’s not coming quietly.”
A distant explosion shook the mountain.
Adjoa’s eyes widened.
Accura’s blades lit with a bright green flash.
The movement had begun.
